Zulmira Santos, Graça Santo, Orlando Guete, Guadalupe Rojas, Carla Vicente, Luís Ferreira
Abstract: The authors developed a retrospective study to assess the prescription of psychotropic drugs in oncologic patients in a surgery ward, as well as the referral patterns to psychiatric unit. Psychotropic drugs were prescribed to 56% of the sample. Hypnotics and anxiolytics were the most prescribed (78%), neuroleptic in 13% and antidepressant in 9%. 4% of patients were referred to psychiatric evaluation. Adjustment disorder and reactive depression were the most common diagnosis. These disorders fulfil the great majority of the diagnosis (67%). History of unipolar depressive disease was detected in 33% of the patients referred. This results shows that, in our country, there’s still a under use of psychotropic drugs in oncologic patients, and that this population is insufficiently referred to Psychiatry consultation, especially if we attend the high prevalence of psychological and psychiatry disorders in this patients.

Joana Serra & Denise Alexandra
Abstract: Psychoactive drugs play an important role in the treatment and control of the psychopathology of the cancer patient. The interactions between psychoactive and anticancerous drugs may inadvertently reduce or increase their effects drugs, resulting in therapeutic failure or additional toxicity. This fact may unfavourably influence the patient's treatment, contribute and increase morbidity, and even prolong treatment or hospitalisation. Hence the controversy presented to the therapeutic teams responsible for such patients, evidently enframed in the whole that constitutes their oncologic problems. The authors try to clarify these aspects, reviewing some psychopharmacologic considerations in the oncologic sphere, namely the pharmacocynetics of psychoactive and anticancerous drugs, and their possible clinical implications.

Abstract: Significative advances in the management of cancer have arisen in the last decades, allowing the treatment of some cancers or longer survival times. However, treatment options keep a high amount of adverse effects with negative impact on the physical and emotional well-being of the patient. In this context, the assessment of the Health related quality of life (HRQOL) acquires great relevance. The present article reviews the concept of Health related quality of life (HRQOL), the importance of its assessment on treatment options as well as in research, namely in psycho-oncology. We address some considerations concerning the evaluation of quality life, using as an example an assessment tool, the Quality of live Questionnaire (QLQ-C30) developed by EORTC (European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer).
